December 31, 2007 - Volunteering at the University of Iowa's Senior Converence

Michaeltrains continued to offer services to the community when we volunteered to be a panelist at the Senior Conference 2007 for graduating seniors at The University of Iowa. Hosted for the second time by the Pomerantz Career Center, more than 130 attendees received insight about life after college and making the transition to the workplace through keynote speakers, networking with employers and breakout sessions.  Topics that were discussed during the sessions included understanding benefits, negotiating job offers, learning to budget, adjusting to the workplace, networking and more.  “Any time we are called upon to help the college community, we are happy to help,” Michaeltrains president Michael Kaplan said. “I remember starting out as a new college graduate.  Plenty of people helped me, so I am happy to return the favor.”

December 24, 2007 - Michaeltrains Launches New and Improved Website

We are back and better than ever!  Ok, we never really went away.  In fact, thanks to many of you, the business of creating resumes, cover letters, and other job search material is continuing to grow.  We are very thrilled that so many of you have used our services to great success.  When we receive an e-mail or a phone call that one of our resumes helped a client land an interview, we are delighted beyond belief!

So if we are doing so well and helping so many people, why has it been so long since we updated the website?  Well that’s a long story, but thanks to comments and suggestions from our clients we have re-designed Michaeltrains.com to make it easier for you to send us information, place orders, contact us and more!  Actually what you see now is only the start. In the next several weeks we plan to provide tools to help you succeed and separate yourself from the competition, such as producing a monthly newsletter.

We have a new and much improved website, but the quality of our services has not changed.  We understand you have a choice when it comes to resume writers, and sometimes it's hard to tell each of us apart and determine what makes us better than anyone else.  Each time we try to come up with a fancy answer to that question, it comes down to one simple thing…our resumes work.  That’s it!  No fancy marketing language, no ridiculous promises…just a proven belief that our resumes get positive results.

So we are very enthusiastic about launching this new web page.  Read below for more What's New items, and use our easy to manage ordering system when you are ready to get started.

All our best!

The Michaeltrains Team

December 12, 2007 - Michaeltrains Offers Free Consulting to Local College Students
At Michaeltrains, we have always been proud of our commitment to the local college communities. We have volunteered at the University of Iowa’s Career Center, as well as speaking to student organizations and classes at the University of Iowa and Kirkwood Community College. Beginning in 2008, however, we plan to do even more.

Specifically, we are excited to announce a program for free job-search related consulting to local college and university students.  According to Michaeltrains President Michael Kaplan, “College students have many resources at their disposal when it comes to the job-search process. The colleges' Career Centers are phenomenal at providing services to aid the student, but there is also a need for the student to receive the perspective of an employer with many years as hiring manager for entry level positions. This is where we come in.”

According to Kaplan, Michaeltrains plans to offer free mock interviewing, job search seminars and other programs to the college student. “We want this program to be a complimentary and useful tool for the student. As such, we plan to keep it very flexible and responsive to the needs of this market.”

The company plans to offer these free services in many formats, including 1:1, small group, or even classroom settings. They can provide services in person (in Eastern Iowa), or via telephone and e-mail.

Kaplan added, “If you are a college student, teacher, or somehow connected to a college or university and think you might have an interest in our FREE services, please contact us. We will make it work.”

December 3, 2007 - Michaeltrains Welcomes New Marketing Manager

Michaeltrains is thrilled to announce that Theresa Winters, a native of Hampton, IA, has joined the organization as Marketing Manager and Director of Internet Development.  Theresa has assumed responsibility for managing the content of the website and communicating with the strategic partner network.

“I am very happy that Theresa made the decision to come aboard,” noted Michael Kaplan, company president.  “She represents the best of creativity, imagination, and drive that we have been seeking.  I hope Theresa remains with us for a long time to come.”

As part of her introduction to the company, Theresa submitted to an extensive fact finding interview.  Please join me in welcoming Theresa and learning more about her.

What are your hobbies?

Watching TV, Procrastinating-especially with homework (this is where the TV comes in); shopping for things I don’t need, attempting to be a Chef

What is your favorite food?

Penne Pasta with Basil Pesto, Steamed Broccoli, Italian Sausage, and Sun-Dried Tomatoes is what my roommate and I made last night, which was awesome.  I also love anything with seafood.

Are you a Dog or Cat person?

DOGS!  I have never had one because my mom is not an animal person, but I cannot wait to get one.  Right now I am living with my roommate’s cat, Lucy, which has been a new experience.

Why did you decide to join Michaeltrains?

Michaeltrains is already opening many doors for me that will be vital to my future Marketing career.   Having the opportunity to be a part of launching and maintaining the new website has been particularly insightful to what goes into running one’s own company.  Not to mention seeing first-hand the marketing tricks and techniques of a successful small business owner, Michael Kaplan.  I feel very lucky having the chance to be involved!

Why do you think someone should have a professionally written resume?

Job hunting is stressful enough without having to worry whether your resume sets you apart from the other applicants.  A well-written, professional resume helps break the barrier between the hiring manager and the qualified job-seeker.

What is your philosophy of life?

As Dwight K. Shrute once said on The Office, “Don’t be an Idiot.”

June 19,2007 - MichaelTrains Marks Its One-Year Anniversary

In late May, the MichaelTrains Company (www.MichaelTrains.com), an Iowa based professional development service, celebrated its one-year anniversary. The company began with the idea to professionally assist individuals with resume writing and businesses with oral and written communication and has developed in to so much more.

“I am very happy with the progress of the organization”, company president Michael Kaplan noted.“Our process is pretty unique, and our client results have been exceptional. We are a local resource many people do not know about yet. I am very excited about the future as we continue to move forward and grow.”

Kaplan, who started the MichaelTrains Company in 2006, is a 1989 graduate of Northern Illinois University and always knew he wanted to assist others in professional development. “We know the challenges and stress of a job search. If our resume service can help a client receive more interviews with a faster response time, we served our purpose."
